History of Sonitrol

Over 40 years ago in the town of Anderson, Indiana, a man named Robert Baxter had an innovative idea to install strategically placed microphones within the walls of a building to listen for, and pinpoint, the location of termites. Baxter invented other sound related devices and developed a new name for the company that would incorporate his inventions. The name "Sonitrol" was created from the words sound and control. On June 16, 1960, Sonitrol became incorporated.

In 1963, Baxter met Al Cronk, a local police officer and alarm company owner, who was experiencing problems with his equipment and monitoring of his alarm systems. Cronk hired Baxter to maintain the equipment and develop new ideas for his alarm company. Thus the invention of the audio sensor and Sonitrol, the Security Company, was born. Through word-of-mouth, the unique audio concept spread, and dealerships opened in many other cities.
